Originally founded as Lafayette National Park in 1919, the oldest National Park east of the Mississippi River, Acadia National Park was renamed and established by an act of Congress in 1929. This unique landscape tells the history of great expanses of time written in the rocks. Evidence of this rich geologic past is seen across the island, along rocky shorelines and atop windswept mountains. Acadia is the first national park with an endowed trail system, created through the Acadia Trails Forever program. These trails include the 44-mile carriage road system, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr., encompassing scenic roads and 17 historic stone bridges used by hikers, runners, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and equestrians.
