Established in 1906 as one of America’s first national monuments, President Theodore Roosevelt set aside the Petrified Forest to protect its resources from theft and vandalism. Throughout the next 100 years, further efforts have been made by Congress to preserve the Petrified Forest National Parks geological and cultural heritage within the colorful Chinle Formation. The park was elevated to National Park status by President John F. Kennedy in 1964, and was increased in size to 218,533 acres in 2004.
