Established October 2, 1968 by President Lindon B. Johnson, the North Cascades National Park Service Complex comprises 684,000 acres of wild lands, including the park’s north and south units as well as Lake Chelan and Ross Lake national recreation areas. The arduous terrain of this isolated wilderness was noted by trapper Alexander Ross in the early 1800s: "A more difficult route to travel never fell to man's lot."  Now, the casual visitor finds easy access to the peaceful forests, icy glaciers and dramatic peaks of North Cascades National Park by way of the main roads, and nearly 400 miles of trails are enjoyed by adventurous hikers, backpackers and mountaineers.
