Mount Rainier National Park was founded on March 2, 1899 by President William McKinley as the fifth national park in the United States. Covering 236,381 acres, including the 14,410 ft. stratovolcano Mount Rainier, it was the first national forest to be designated as a national park. In 1997, the entire park was named as a National Historic Landmark for its National Park Service rustic-style “parkitecture”. As penned by John Muir in 1898 in The Wild Parks and Forest Reservations of the West, "If in the making of the West, Nature had what we call parks in mind-places for rest, inspiration, and prayers -this Rainier region must surely be one of them."
