Established on March 4, 1940 by President Franklin Roosevelt, Kings Canyon National Park’s 461,901 acres consists of two sections: The main section of the park features sheer granite mountains towering above wide glacier-carved canyons, pristine lakes, and 75 of the most remote and rugged miles of the John Muir Trail. Unconnected and to the west, the original General Grant National Park, established in 1890, stands as a reminder of our nation’s battles between development and protection of the land and the resources it holds. Within Grants Grove, giant sequoias stand the test of time, including the 3,000 year-old General Grant Tree, standing 267 feet tall. The southern border of the park is contiguous with Sequoia National Park, and both parks are administered together as one spectacular unit.
