Guadalupe Mountains National Park was established and formally opened to the public on September 30, 1972.  The park preserves one of the finest examples of an ancient marine fossil reef on Earth, and is home to thousands of fossils from marine, animal and plant life living in the Permian period, about 265 million years ago. The park contains Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,749 feet.  Deep canyons, high ridges and dependable seeps and springs allow for an amazing diversity of wildlife to thrive in the extremes of climate and topography within this rugged mountain range.
