After decades of discussion and negotiation between those supporting preservation of lands and expansion of tourism in the area and those interested in the livestock grazing, mining, forestry and gaming opportunities available on the border of Nevada and Utah, both houses of Congress finally agreed upon the Great Basin National Park Act, signed into law by President Ronald Regan on October 27, 1986. Great Basin National Park encompasses 76,000 acres, protecting Lehman Caves and its 1.5 miles of underground passages, as well as 65 miles of trails offering a chance to see glacial moraines, ancient bristlecone pines, and sweeping views of the surrounding basin and range country.
