Made up of over one million acres of wild and scenic land, Glacier National Park was established as America’s 10th national park on May 11, 1910 by President William H. Taft. In 1932 Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park were designated in 1932 as Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park to celebrate the longstanding peace and friendship between the United States and Canada. Known to Native Americans as the “Shining Mountains” and “Backbone of the World”, the park serves as a steward to a vast ecosystem, home to almost 70 species of mammals and supporting over 270 bird species.
