Established December 6, 1947, Everglades National Park was the first park designated not for its geological wonders, but to protect a delicate ecosystem that was quickly becoming compromised by encroaching civilization. Protecting only 20% of the original Everglades, at 1.5 million acres the park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, including the Ten Thousand Islands area, containing the largest stand of protected mangrove forest in the Western Hemisphere.  Accessible only by boat or canoe, the vast backcountry of Everglades National Park provides important habitat for hundreds of plant and bird species, as well as rare and endangered species like the West Indian manatee, American crocodile, and the elusive Florida panther.
