Established as a national monument in 1933 and awarded national park status on October 31, 1994 as part of the Desert Protection Act signed by President Bill Clinton, Death Valley National Park is 3 million acres of dazzling sand dunes, deep water-carved canyons exposing multicolored rock layers, and rugged snow-capped mountains. The park is the largest in the contiguous 48 states. It is home to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America and holds the record for the hottest documented temperature on earth: a sweltering 134 degrees was witnessed on July 10, 1913.
