Congaree Swamp National Monument was established by Congress on October 18, 1976, "to preserve and protect for the education, inspiration, and enjoyment of present and future generations an outstanding example of a near-virgin, southern hardwood forest situated in the Congaree River floodplain…"  On November 10, 2003 it was designated as the nation's 57th National Park and the first and only national park in South Carolina. Congaree National Park encompasses nearly 27,000 acres, containing the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States as well as a biologically diverse river floodplain ecosystem.
