Promoted by Congress to a national park on March 5, 1980, Channel Islands National Park is made up of five stunning islands and the surrounding ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Formed by shifting tectonic plates, the unique microclimate of the islands has created one-of-a-kind ecological diversity. Half of the Channel Island National Park’s 49,354 acres lie underwater; the park is home to 2,000 species of plants and animals, including 145 which are unique to the islands and found nowhere else on earth.
