Granted national park status on November 10, 1978, Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota protects 242,756 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires blended with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The White River Badlands contain the largest assemblage of known late Eocene and Oligocene mammal fossils, and marine fossils are found in deposits of an ancient sea that existed in the region 75 to 67 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. The park is the site of the reintroduction of the black-footed ferret, the most endangered land mammal in North America.
