American Samoa, the only U.S. territory south of the Equator, consists of 10 highly eroded volcanic islands and two coral atolls. With over 3,000 years of Samoan culture and tradition, the National Park of American Samoa was established on October 31, 1988 by working closely with the local Samoan village councils. Comprised of land on four separate islands - Ta’u, Ofu, Olosega and Tutuila - the park displays incredible ecological diversity that provides habitat for native wildlife. Steep volcanic cliffs and tropical rainforests support the native flying foxes; white sand beaches lead to pristine coral reefs offering protection to an estimated 950 species of fish and 250 coral species.
