Virgin Islands National Park, renowned throughout the world for its breathtaking beauty, was established as a national park on August 2, 1956. Within this protected paradise are sub-tropical forests, semi-arid scrublands, and swamps along the coastal areas. These varied climates provide habitats for a diverse range of life, including 140 species of birds, 302 species of fish, 7 species of amphibians, 22 species of mammals and 740 species of plants. Bats are the only mammal native to the Islands, and are important pollinators of the beautiful tropical plants, as well as predators of mosquitos and other insects.
