Patch Size: 2"x3"

Since its establishment by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, Pinnacles National Monument has slowly grown to its present size of about 26,000 acres. On January 10, 2013, legislation passed by Congress was signed into law by President Barack Obama to redesignate the monument to a national park. The park’s namesake pinnacles were created 23 million years ago by the eruption of the Neenach Volcano and have since moved 195 miles northwest of the main body of the volcano due to the shifting of the Pacific Plate along the San Andreas Fault. Seismic activity is common in this area, and the USGS maintains two seismometers within the park boundaries.
