Established as a National Park on July 1, 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park’s complex history can be traced back thousands of years. Remnants of cane torches, slippers, gourds, and mussel shells left behind by Native Americans of the Early Woodland period 4,000 years ago remain perfectly preserved within the cave. Centuries later, European settlers became intrigued with the massive underground passages. With cave tours offered since 1816, Mammoth Cave is one of the oldest tourist attractions in North America. Today, the protected labyrinth of caves, the rolling country above, and the Green River valley continue to excite and inspire.
