Katmai National Monument was established in 1918 to preserve the region devastated by the June, 1912 eruption of Mount Katmai and Novarupta and the scientific hotbed buried in ash within the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. With its expansion and promotion to national park status on December 2, 1980, Katmai National Park and Preserve protects over 4 million acres of land, encompassing 9,000 years of human history as well as important habitat for salmon and the thousands of grizzly bears that feed on them.
