At nearly 800,000 acres, Joshua Tree National Park encompasses three distinct desert ecosystems, distinguished primarily by elevation: the lower Colorado Desert is generally more arid and contains the “jumping” cholla cactus; the higher Mojave Desert displays cooler temperatures and is home to the park’s namesake, the joshua tree, a member of the agave family; the elevated Little San Bernardino Mountains in the western-most part of the park create a habitat for the California juniper and pinyon pine.  It was for the unusual diversity of plants and animals that Joshua Tree National Monument was set aside on August 10, 1936. Elevated to national park status on October 31, 1994, Joshua Tree National Park was established as part of the Desert Protection Act signed by President Bill Clinton.
