Isle Royale National Park was established on April 3, 1940. The park boundary includes Isle Royale, the largest island on Lake Superior, as well as approximately 450 smaller islands. Recognized as an international biosphere reserve, the park encompasses a remote and primitive wilderness archipelago. The difficulty of immigration to and from these isolated islands has created simple ecosystems and provides habitat for only 18 species of mammals, including wolves, moose, and the abundant red squirrel. "To step into Isle Royale is to leave behind one's own self and one's world and to begin a new exploration into the nature of life".  -Napier Shelton, Superior Wilderness, 1997
