Officially dedicated in 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Great Smoky Mountains National Park preserves a rich cultural tapestry of Southern Appalachian history as well as immense biological diversity.  Within the park’s 522,000 acres, elevations range from 875 to 6,643 feet and provide habitat for over 17,000 documented species; scientists believe an additional 30,000-80,000 species may live here. As the most-visited park in America, each year millions of visitors experience the sentiment of wilderness advocate Ernie Dickerman: "When I found the Smoky Mountains … I knew I had found what I was looking for on this planet."
