Elevated from national monument status on May 14, 1930, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is situated in the Guadalupe Mountains on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. Within the park boundaries more than 118 known caves have been discovered and explored. Each of these caves, some of the biggest and longest in the world, were formed by a very unusual ingredient: sulfuric acid. Seventeen species of bat have been identified within the park, including the Mexican free-tailed bats, which can be seen emerging from the caves in droves to feast on bugs by the ton during sunset from Memorial Day to mid-October.
